For the next 3 weeks, our devotions will focus on the name of our community: His Girls Together. I’d like to take a look at each word and explain why we chose it.
We’ll begin with the word His. See below for the devotion for Week Two!
Start with this funny question: What was the last thing you threw away?
Now, think of something you would never throw away. This needs to be something that you own, something that is yours and yours alone. This special something would not be something that you loan out to a friend or let someone else borrow. This is something that you keep close, something that you never want to lose or give away.
It might be a beloved stuffed animal that you used to sleep with (or still sleep with!). It might be a personal journal or a diary. It might be something you received as a gift, something that is special because of who gave it to you. It might be an object that represents something… something you got for a special occasion.
The special something that comes to my mind is my wedding ring. I would never let someone borrow my ring, and I would never want to give it away or sell it. In fact, I very rarely take it off! I keep it close because it is special to me. It special because John gave it to me, and it represents our commitment to and our love for each other.
Brainstorm together what that special object might be for each of you. Keep talking until you’ve come up with something special… that certain thing that is uniquely yours.
If you are a Christian, then you belong to God. You are that something special that he holds close. Take a look at what God says about us in his Word:
“I have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine.” Leviticus 20:26
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1b
“I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.” Isaiah 49:16
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish and no one will snatch them out of my hand.” John 10:27-28
God holds us very close because we are special to him. We belong to him; we are his treasured possession. He will never loan us out, let someone borrow us, give us away or sell us. Once we belong to him, we belong to him forever.
There is nothing we can do to make him not want us anymore. Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
Isn’t that good news? God wants us so much that he sent Jesus to do for us what we could never do for ourselves. Jesus lived the perfect life (which we could never do) and died a sacrificial death (which we aren’t qualified to do because we’re not perfect) so that we could belong to God forever. It all depends on Jesus, not on us. That’s why it’s for forever and nothing can change it.
(All you have to do is believe this truth! That’s it! That’s why the word gospel means “good news”!)
That’s what it means to be a Christian. It’s not about doing the right things or not doing the wrong things. It’s about belonging to Jesus. Forever.
Talk over these questions together:
1. What do you think it means to be a Christian? Have you added something on that doesn’t need to be there?
2. If you’re a Christian, how does it make you feel that you belong to Jesus forever? That there’s nothing you can do to mess it up?
Respond by praying together and thanking God that you belong to him. If you’re not sure that you belong to Jesus, ask him to make you his. He loves to honor that request.
His. We’re calling this site His Girls Together because we want to celebrate the fact that we’re his. Forever! Let’s create something this week to remind us that belonging to Jesus is what being a Christian is all about.
If you’re a Christian, write the word “His” somewhere creative to remind you that you belong to Jesus. Take a picture of it! Let this picture remind you that you belong to Him no matter what.
Reply with a comment to respond to the truths we’re talking about this week! Also, share your picture with us on Instagram with the hashtag #hisgirlstogether. Maybe someone will see your creative picture of the word “His” and ask you about it. Who knows?
Instagram note: If you’re posting a #hisgirlstogether pic on Instagram for the first time, please leave us a comment and let everyone know what your profile name is! That way, we can follow one another and see how God is using this devotional experience in our lives. My profile name is lindsayfooshee by the way :).
